Adolph Christian Schreyer

(Frankfurt 1828–1899 Kronberg) Horsemen Fighting outside the Gates of a Town, signed Ad. Schreyer, oil on panel, 24.5 x 47 cm, framed, (Rei)

Illustrated and catalogued: Uwe Opper and Andrea Weber-Mittelstaedt, Die Kronberger Malerkolonie und befreundete Frankfurter Künstler, Kronberg i. Taunus, 2008, p. 149. August Wiedespahn and Helmut Bode, Die Kronberger Malerkolonie, Ein Beitrag zur Frankfurter Kunstgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts, Frankfurt am Main, 1971 (3rd & expanded edition 1982), p. 134, Ill. 73. Adolph Schreyer: (…) After the successes of his paintings of military scenes, exhibited annually at the Paris Salon from 1863 onwards, Schreyer also received numerous international awards. From now on Schreyer would turn away from large scale battle scenes to specialise in scenes of equestrian life, with no particular historical background. (…) Schreyer’s fondness for equestrian scenes and his focus on motifs from the Crimean War, from Galicia, Hungary, Wallachia and, above all, the Orient, served to make him rapidly well-known. As the result of his contact with French Orientalism and his travels to Anatolia, Syria and Algeria, Schreyer became the most well-known German Oriental painter of his time. The settled and colourful accents set the horses and their exotically-dressed riders firmly in the centre of the scene.” (Opper, Weber-Mittelstaedt, 2008, p. 149.)
